Met Ball for dummies

Yesterday we were bombarded with pictures from the Met ball, but what the hell is the Met ball???!!! The Met Ball´s original name is Costume Institute annual benefit Gala which celebrates the opening of the exhibitions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art ( aka. the Met) in New York. The Costume Institute has two exhibitions a year, because the items are very fragile & therefore there is not a permanent installation. Instead they have themes or focus on one specific designer. In the past there have fx been a Chanel exhibition, YSL, Alexander McQueen, Superheroes: fashion & fantasy & an Extreme Beauty exhibition focusing on physical transformation, ideals & fashion. The exhibitions explores culture & history through fashion. The entire collection is huge & contains more than 35.000 items.

The Met Gala is co-chaired by Vogue´s Anna Wintour & is one of the biggest events in the fashion industry. The tickets are supposed to be expensive to say the least. Like one ticket can support an entire African village for a decade & is said to start at 6500 dollars & go up to 15000 dollars. For tables it´s a whole different story they range from 150.000 to 250.000 dollars. The Met Ball has been a huge social event since the Costume Institute was founded in 1948 & is regarded as the fashion worlds best red carpet event.

Below are some of my favorite looks from this years Met Ball

Anna Wintour

Mary Kate Olsen in a dress from The Row

Camilla Belle in Ralp Lauren

Ciara

Kate Bosworth

Kirsten Dunst
My friend would say that this is Dee Snider, but ofcourse this is Sarah Jessica Parker
Nicole Richie
Rihanna
Rosario Dawson

Scarlett Johansson

Vera Wang looks so gorgeous in the yellow dress.

This must be the weirdest look. Marc Jacobs…hmmm that handsome man turned himself into something not so handsome. To me it´s not that he wore a dress, but the white shorts & the musketeer shoes are really bad.

Oh that’s awesome! Thank you 🙂 Btw doesn’t it look like she has something underneath? That’s the only thing I don’t like

        I can´t tell if she has something underneath-maybe I need glasses ; )

Most of those are really bad. I only ‘mildly’ like number 2 and 3. Maybe that’s why I’m not a fashion designer…

    • monicaali says:

Really?!!! These are the ones I liked the most, but then again I know I don´t share taste with everyone : )

Thank you for dumming it down to my level, I follow the red carpet stuff online every year but to be honest I never knew exactly what the soirée was all about. My favorite is definitely Vera Wang her dress is gorgeous and I love the Greecian headband with it.
